Experiments with the Microscope

Ever heard of "microscopaphobia"?  Well, we have the cure with this program.  It consists of a 66 minute video and a 100 page reproducible handbook, perfect for classroom microscope instruction at grades 4-10.

The video consists of four separate programs on one tape:

1.  Using the microscope and preparing slides (12 minutes)

2.  Investigating Cells (15 minutes)

3.  Observing 10 prepared slides (22 minutes, see below)

4.  Investigating Life in Pond Water (16 minutes)

Learn how to properly use a microscope and make wet-mount and permanent slides.  See many exciting activities you can do with cells.  Learn about the stages of mitosis, see what the cells of an elodea leaf do when salt water is added and watch the blood course through the tail of a live goldfish.

Watch 1-3 minute short segments on particular prepared slides then take your slides and see if you can identify what you just saw.  Exciting educational specimens, like insect legs, an earthworm cross section and bacteria.

In part four, see the wonderful world of tiny things found in a single drop of pond water.  These scenes will amaze you!

The handbook that accompanies the video is absolutely wonderful!  In it, you'll find 100 pages of lesson plans, info sheets, lab activity pages, puzzles, overheads, and even a quiz on each of the four sections above.

The slide set is also available (see picture above).  It consists of 10 slides and correlates directly to section three of the video.  These are high quality glass slides and many of them are "multi-specimen".

Bacteria (3 types);  Monocot and Dicot Stems;  Woody Stem;  Onion Root Tip (mitosis);  Plant leaves (from a desert, temperate and wet climates);  Pine Needle cross section;  A flea;   Insect Legs (four types); The cross-section of an earthworm;  and Blood Cells.

The "school version" which includes public performance rights and a teacher handbook is given as a free "value added" gift to all customers who purchase 5 or more compound microscopes.
